The career progress is a multi-factor model. If you just ask, does it matter if I only work 8 hours but others work 10 hours? The answer is yes. But by how much and to what extent? Is it worth to scarify the time with family for working mom?

I would disagree that 9-5 working schedule means say goodbye to promotion, but shorter hours does make it more challenging to get promoted. In general, the weighting of attendance is normally not large (although it varies by company culture), you could totally counter the negative impact by increase communication with your boss, socialize with your colleague within working hours, increase your productivity and impact to bottom line. On the other side, quality family time goes a longer way to support your career than a few high attendance scores.
