See if you have friends or co-workers who used roofers before and had good recommendations. If not, it's on your luck.
Find 2-3 roofers from yellowpage and ask for free quote. They will come and take a look at the leak and tell you what's wrong, and how they will repair it, how much it will cost. THey should provide you a written quote with details on what to be repaired and cost. Also ask if they have the liabilititly coverage and insurance(otherise if someone get injured doing the repaire, you are in BIG trouble). At least they need to show written proof(original copies best) before they start working.
Then after the quoting, you can decide who may do a good job. Basically you can telll from how much they know about the problem, and how they explains it to you and their solution. A lot of their professionalism can be observed then to help you make the decision.
THe price varies a lot depending on what's wrong. Compare the quotes and select one you are comfortable with and sounds reasonable. If sth's extremely cheap or opposite, I wouldn't choose it.
also, if there provide warranty, it may be worthwhile for the extra money. Last time, we took the quote of $600 for 2 leakings instead of the 350 one. Because the $600 guy carefully explained why it's leaking and how he planns to repaire it. He also pointed out that the previous owner must have had someone repaire that in the past but didn't tell us when we bought the house. He sounded like he knows what he's doing and he gave us an old customer's number for reference. He fixed a problem ultimately for them, which they have hired a number of roofers before but didn't get the problem fixed. He also provided 2 year warranty, which we liked.
There have been really heavy rains since he repaired it and so far so good.
have someone to look at it. and get it fix as soon as possible. water damage can cost a lot.
